Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin

Beer style:
Wallonian-style Farmhouse Ale Brewed with Pumpkin and Spice

Brewed in the style of the farmhouse ales of Belgium's southern countryside, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin utilizes a blend of rye, wheat and barley in the grain bill, earthy flavoring hops and a classic saison yeast. Ripe, flame roasted Virginia sugar pumpkins and brown sugar provide a hearty backbone to this 8.5% ABV beer. Freshly ground Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar clove and whole allspice harmonize with pounds of freshly sliced organic ginger root.

A beautiful hue of autumn russet, Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin displays a voluminous head, with a bouquet of aromatic fresh spice. Medium to full in body, this ale offers a balanced flavor of caramelized pumpkin and pie spices, with a lingering finish laced with a hint of fresh ginger.

Sugar pumpkins came from the Farm to Family Market on Mechanicsville Turnpike and from the Village Garden. Peruvian organic ginger came from Ellwood Thompsons Local Market in Carytown. Pumpkin Pie Spice came from C.F. Sauer, right around the corner from Hardywood. Whole Ceylon cinnamon, whole Grenada nutmeg, whole Madagascar cloves and whole allspice came from Penzys Spices in Carytown. All are local Richmond businesses.

Best with:

Hardywood Farmhouse Pumpkin pairs beautifully with game birds, particularly quail, dove, and turkey - preferably fried. A great accompaniment to butternut squash soup or oven baked yams, Farmhouse Pumpkin is also right at home with spiced pies, especially bourbon pecan pie, apple pie and, of course, pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream.

I've made several pumpkin beers in the past, but this is the first I've seen to incorporate rye malt. Now that I think of it, this makes perfect sense. Can't wait to try this beer!

My wife and I enjoyed this as our Thanksgiving dessert. Paula Dean couldn't have done it better! A rich pumpkin ale perfectly crafted.

I tried this beer today for the first time. My description would be of a thick, golden Belgian with light hints of pumpkin and a light clove finish. I personally enjoy more pumpkin and spice in a pumpkin ale, but overall very enjoyable.
