Hardywood Gingerbread Stout Earns a Perfect 100 Rating in BeerAdvocate Magazine
In the April 2012 issue (#63) of BeerAdvocate magazine, Hardywood Gingerbread Stout was rated a perfect 100. I heard this first on April 1 from a friend who had access to an advance copy, and I was initially suspicious that his snapshot of the review was a photoshopped April Fool’s prank. The next day, a few sporadic Twitter mentions shared the same news, then we started receiving emails from all over the country inquiring about availability of Hardywood Gingerbread Stout (only in Richmond, once a year, after we’ve harvested the beer’s signature ingredient: fresh, local, Casselmonte Farm ginger). I’m not sure I really believed the 100 score until we received our copy of BeerAdvocate magazine at the brewery yesterday, and the impact still hasn’t really sunk in, but to say I’m ecstatic and extremely proud of our team is a vast understatement.
To provide a little background, BeerAdvocate has been, without question, one of the predominant forces behind the increased awareness and appreciation of high quality beer since BeerAdvocate.com was launched in 1996 by the brothers Alström, Jason and Todd. Today, BeerAdvocate.com is, by far, the most visited beer website on the planet with 18 million monthly pageviews, BeerAdvocate magazine boasts a monthly circulation of 45,000 copies, @BeerAdvocate has some 250,000 Twitter followers, and the organization’s beer festivals are among the most anticipated and best attended in the country.
Over the years, Todd and Jason Alström have methodically written thousands of beer reviews, which are always insightful and keenly perceptive. Their ratings are objective, they never judge against rigid style guidelines, and they are often unforgiving (Hardywood Singel, rated a respectable 86, was described as “a yeast bomb”). The Alström brothers are stingy when it comes to doling out 100 reviews, having only granted them to a handful of now legendary beers, such as Russian River Pliny the Elder, Founders Breakfast Stout, Portsmouth Kate the Great, New Glarus Raspberry Tart, Ayinger Celebrator, and St. Bernardus Abt. 12. To have one of our creations grouped with these iconic beers is humbling, for sure.
Being part of the team at Hardywood that earned a perfect rating by BeerAdvocate is an experience I will forever cherish. While it feels a little overwhelming to receive this kind of recognition after just six months of business, I am confident that this team will never tire of its ambition to brew extraordinary beers.
